June 30, 2007 Cindy Blackberg to Present Quilting Workshop Cindy Blackberg will be presenting a workshop about the Mariner’s Compass June 30, 2007 from 9:00 AM till 3:00 PM at the McMinn County Living Heritage Museum in Athens, TN. Cindy’s most popular workshop comes back with a brand new look. This workshop will satisfy all tastes, since students can choose to hand piece or machine piece the block. Cindy’s techniques will show how easy the block can be pieced without foundation papers or templates! Each student will stamp out her pieces to make it the most accurate compass EVER!
July 16-August 25, 2007 "More Than Childs Play: A Century of Toys"The McMinn County Living Heritage Museum is pleased to announce they were the recipient of a Community Grant from Wal-Mart to help present a new exhibit "More Than Childs Play: A Century of Toys" which will be on display at the Museum July 16th through August 25th. Don't miss your chance to reminisce because there’s something for everyone at this historical look at popular toys and games from the early 1900s to the present. Included in the exhibit are such classics as Barbie, Etch A Sketch, Wiffle Ball, Play-Doh, Monopoly, E-Z Bake Oven, GI Joe, Atari and more. Each toy in the exhibition is represented by vintage examples. In some cases, More Than Child's Play shows several examples on how the toy has changed since its inception. Additional materials include interpretive text that details the toys’ invention and evolution, how they work and their significance in American culture and more. The Museum will also have toys on display throughout the exhibit for kids of all ages to play with.
August 17 & 18, 2007 Nationally Known Quilt Designer to Present Workshop at Living Heritage Museum Pam Bono, nationally known designer, publisher and teacher in the quilt world will be presenting a quilting lecture and class August 17th and 18th at the McMinn County Living Heritage Museum in Athens, Tennessee. If you have ever wanted to take a class from a well-known teacher, but can’t afford the time and expense to go to a big quilt show, here’s your chance. Sign up today to enjoy the experience of learning from someone who is creative, fun and down to earth.
September 8 -October 31, 2007-“Quilts Without Borders” 10th Annual Quilt Show Japanese Quilt Show" The Japanese have always had an appreciation for beautiful fabrics and sewing was a part of their everyday life. The art of quilting gives the modern Japanese woman an avenue of expression in design and color to incorporate with their appreciation of textiles. Their love of quilting will be expressed through approximately 40 uniquely beautiful quilts on loan to the museum from the Japanese Quilting Society of Tokyo, Japan. Quilts on display will combine both contemporary and one-of-a-kind designs, some made from antique Japanese fabrics. Traditional American patterns with Japanese influence add flavor to the display. Each of the pieces is worked in rich and unusual fabrics, and the makers have given great attention to detail in design, pattern and unique quilting style.
September 19-20, 2007 Native American Educational Program Two-day project for area school children introduce students to Native American Indians from various tribes dance, songs, crafts and culture. Preregistration required. Meets curriculum standards for the State of Tennessee.
October 1-31 2007 “A Tradition of Light and Truth” Tennessee Wesleyan College Exhibit Since its founding in 1857, Tennessee Wesleyan College has been situated on a hill within the city limits of Athens, Tennessee. For 150 years, the college has been a vital institution of higher education in the Southeast and although it is a small college, Tennessee Wesleyan has significantly influenced the region it serves, as well as thousands of alumni. From its halls have ventured forth future leaders in church, education, music, science, law, medicine, government, and civic affairs. To help celebrate the 150th Anniversary of TWC, the Living Heritage Museum will have on display photos and artifacts from its long history.
October 7, 2007 Annual Vintage Vehicle Show The Living Heritage Museum along with the Athens Travelers sponsors a vintage vehicle car show. Enter your car or stop by and vote for your favorite ride.
October 13, 2007 Tennessee Wesleyan College Class of 1957 Reunion The Living Heritage Museum hosts the 1957 graduating class from Tennessee Wesleyan College.
October 31, 2007 Museum Haunting Looking for a fun, safe place to take your kids trick-or-treating this Halloween? Bring your little goblins and ghouls to show off their spooktacular costumes at the McMinn County Living Heritage Museum in Athens. The Museum will have treats for all those who come in costume this Halloween (parents too!).
November 3, 2007 “Sweet Architecture” Gingerbread House Workshops At the "gingerbread workshop" everyone gets to create a uniquely decorated Gingerbread House. Decorate a pre-constructed Gingerbread House with all the supplies needed to make your very own masterpiece and perhaps earn yourself a prize! Gingerbread houses will then be displayed at the Museum. An adult and children’s workshop will be offered.
November 5-December 7, 2007 “Sweet Architecture” Gingerbread House Exhibit A display and competition of decorative confections based on a specific theme to be announced. Awards will be presented on December 3, 2007.
